Lab and Radiology Order Test Cycle Common Workflow Examples

Example 1: The test order is sent and processed successfully.
  • User Action: Saves and sends an order to an external performing entity (for example, Labcorp).

    Result: On the Orders Summary tab, the system displays Ordered in the NextGen Status column and Pending in the Result Status column.

  • System Action: Sends the order to the performing entity.

    If the order is sent successfully to the performing entity through the NextGen Clinical Message Manager interface, the system displays Sent in the NextGen Status column.

  • System Action: Displays the current status of the test.

    The system displays the lab result status for test order in the Result Status column. If the test results have not been obtained by the performing entity, the system displays Pending in the Result Status column

  • System Action: Sends test order results for access in the Orders module.

    Result: When the test results have been obtained and send to the Orders module, the system displays Final in the Result Status column and updates the NextGen Status to Assigned. The test is now ready for provider sign-off.

  • User Action: The provider signs off the test order.

    Result: The system updates the NextGen Status to Signed-off.

Example 2: A test order is not sent successfully.
  • User Action: Saves and sends an order to an external performing entity.

    Result: On the Orders Summary tab, the system displays Ordered in the NextGen Status column and Pending in the Result Status column.

  • System Action: Sends the order to the performing entity.

    If the order is not successfully sent to the performing entity through the NextGen Clinical Message Manager interface. The system displays Sent Failed in the NextGen Status column.

  • System Action: On the Orders Summary tab, the system displays Sent Failed in the NextGen Status column and Pending in the Result Status column.
Example 3: The test order is sent successfully; but the practice has not yet received all of the results.
  • User Action: On the Orders Summary tab, sends a saved order to an external performing entity.

    Result: The system displays Ordered in the NextGen Status column and Pending in the Result Status column.

  • System Action: Sends the order to the performing entity.

    If the order is successfully sent to the performing entity through the NextGen Clinical Message Manager interface. The system displays Sent in the NextGen Status column and Pending in the Result Status column.

  • System Action: Displays the current status of the test.

    The system displays the lab result status for test order in the Result Status column. For example, if four out of five results for the order are sent to the Orders module, the Result Status column displays Partial and the NextGen Status column displays Assigned.

  • User Action: Continues tracking the order status until Final appears in the Result Status column and Signed-off appears in the NextGen Status column.
Example 4: The user cancels an order that has already been sent.
  • System Action: The NextGen Status displays Cancelled.
  • User Action: Needs to determine if the order was sent successfully or failed. To view the Sent status, the user places the cursor over Cancelled in the NextGen Status column.
