Geriatric Precautions

Geriatrics Precautions contain information about the use of medications by patients who are over the threshold set for geriatric age. The NextGen® Enterprise default for geriatric age is 65 years of age; however, you can modify the age threshold by changing the value of the Geriatric Age Universal Preference.

When a contraindication exists, the DUR displays the following information:

  • Severity level of the precaution
  • Indicators for select organ systems associated with the precaution
  • Precaution narrative

You must acknowledge all drug interactions and select a reason for overriding the warning before you can add the medication. The medication interaction process displays drug interactions according to the display levels set for the system and a specific user.

The medication interaction process does not perform checks on user-defined medications. If the Enterprise option to check for interactions across practices is enabled, the medication interaction process checks for possible interactions across all practices.

If you cancel out of the Drug Interaction window, your action is audited and you must enter a reason.
