Medications Older than 30 Days

If a prescription was created before 30 days, the Send Rx - Create Date Validation error message appears. This message indicates that the receiving pharmacy may reject the prescription. You can respond to this error message as follows: To continue to prescribe the selected medication, select Yes. Electronic Prescriptions

You can electronically submit a prescription directly to a selected pharmacy. The ePrescribing feature uses the Surescripts retail and mail-order networks of pharmacies and must be set up through File Maintenance and System Administrator. You should remember the following points before submitting prescriptions electronically: Any medication you submit electronically must have a valid patient's Rx eligibility request, a valid SIG, a numeric quantity value, and a unit type. When resubmitting (including responding to refill requests) a medication previously prescribed without a valid unit type, you must update the unit type to a valid value. You can submit controlled substances electronically only if ePCS is set up. User-defined medications are not supported with Surescripts. You cannot send a medication that is not DEA Schedule 0 without the required setup. If you need supervision, you cannot send a prescription without selecting the appropriate supervising physician. ePCS Restrictions on Printing and Faxing of Medications

If you print or fax a controlled substance prescription, you cannot eRx that prescription. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax the prescription. However, the printed or faxed report must indicate that the printed or faxed copy is not for dispensing. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax the prescription. However, the printed or faxed report must display a message stating the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The pharmacy’s name must be shown along with the date and time of the eRx message. It must also show that the eRx message failed. You must be aware of local and state laws regulating faxing of controlled medications. These regulations may be stricter than Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Federal Regulations. Printing Patient Prescriptions

You can print a prescription to hand over to the patient. The following apply: If you print or fax a controlled substance prescription, you can no longer ePrescribe the prescription. If you ePrescribe a controlled substance, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must indicate that the printed or faxed copy is "not for dispensing." If you ePrescribe a controlled substance and the transmission fails, you can print or fax the prescription. The printed or faxed report must display a message that states the prescription was originally sent electronically to a pharmacy. The pharmacy’s name, and the date and time of the eRx message must display. The message must also show that the eRx message failed. If the Verify PIN Universal Preference is set to True, you are required to provide Medication Verification when printing a patient prescription. Select a SIG

After you enter the required medication information, you must select a SIG. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR and access the Medications module. Select a medication. Enter all required medication information. Select or build a SIG. The selected SIG is automatically assigned to the medication. If the SIG contains more characters than the display allows, the text is truncated. If you hover the cursor over the truncated text, a tooltip displays the complete SIG. If the SIG exceeds the 140-character maximum for electronic prescriptions, an alert appears next to the SIG text. Select a SIG You can change the quantity and the interval of the medication by either typing the values or using the arrows to select the appropriate values.
