Check Medical Necessity for Laboratory and Diagnostic Order Items

Before you begin Ensure that you have the license for medical necessity check. Ensure that you have configured medical necessity check in File Maintenance. Ensure that you have selected the insurance information for the patient in the All tab. Note: Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) derives the insurance settings from the Practice Preferences configuration. Medical necessity includes a defined list of tests that are linked to medical problems. Government insurances such as Medicare Part B require approval of a test's necessity before it can be ordered and paid for. Handle AOE Questions

Before you begin Before you begin, ensure that you have configured the Order AOE Questions and Order AOE Answers system master files in File Maintenance. For more information, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the latest File Maintenance Master Files Guide for NextGen® Enterprise. You can answer Ask at Order Entry (AOE) questions while ordering laboratory and diagnostic tests through performing entities that require AOE, such as such as Labcorp and Quest Diagnostics® . Open CPOE. Select an order item. Assign a diagnosis to the selected order item. Select the Laboratory or Diagnostic tab. Under the AOE Question Answer section, select the answers to the questions. Note: Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) displays an indication for any tests that are configured for AOE answers. CPOE automatically saves your answers. Modify Assigned Diagnoses on Orders

When you select a diagnosis in the Assign Diagnosis section, Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) automatically adds it to all the selected order items. You can manually change the diagnosis selection for individual order items. Open CPOE. Select an order item. Assign a diagnosis to the selected order item. To modify the diagnosis for an order item, do one of the following: In the All tab, select the expand icon corresponding to the order item. Select the Laboratory, Diagnostic, or Immunization tab, and then select the expand icon corresponding to the order item. The Modify Diagnosis section appears. Select a diagnosis. Note: You can select multiple diagnoses. For more information on how to use the Search and Clear options under Modify Diagnosis, see steps 4-6 in Add Diagnoses to Order Items. Manage Laboratory Order Details

In the Laboratory tab, you can view and modify your selected laboratory order items, associated diagnoses, and other general information, such as billing type and order priority. Note: Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) groups the laboratory order items by performing entity. Open CPOE. Select an order item. Assign a diagnosis to the order item. To view and modify the details of the order item, do one of the following: Select the Laboratory tab. In the All tab, select the order item's link under Description. Under the Laboratory Order section, do any of the following: View the patient's treatment history. Modify the assigned diagnosis . To change the performing entity for the selected laboratory order item, select the corresponding cross icon and reselect the order item with a different performing entity. View Placed Orders List

After you place an order in Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE), the order status appears on the Placed Items list on the CPOE Order Search Bar. You can view the details of your order in the Orders module. Open NextGen® Enterprise EHR and select a patient from Patient Lookup window. Open CPOE. Select an order item. Assign a diagnosis to the selected order item. Note: For an immunization order item, Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) automatically adds the default ICD-10-CM Z23 diagnosis code. Place the order. To view a summary of the placed orders, hover over Placed Items.A list of the placed orders for the encounter appears. Before you begin While selecting your orders, ensure that you address all the mandatory indicators, which are denoted by . Ensure that you have completed the charge submission and payers information configurations in File Maintenance so that your practice can post charges for performing laboratory and diagnostic tests, and also automatically include Healthcare Common Procedural Coding System (HCPCS) codes and Modifiers in the charges for diagnostic orders with Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) check.
