Orthopedic Visit Types
In Orthopedics, you can use different visit types for fracture care. You can bill the global, fracture-care procedure code, or you can bill for each encounter separately using the standard E&M codes 99201–99215.
Use the Initial Fracture Care visit type if the encounter is the first visit for:
- Assessing the patient’s injury
- Confirming that a fracture is present
- Stabilizing the injury only
- Referring the patient to another provider to manage the fracture
Use the Fracture FU (global visit) visit type if the intent of the encounter is to begin treatment of a fracture and to bill the global fracture care procedure code. Use the Fracture Care/Casting/Strapping (proc_vs_cast_strapping) template.
Use the Fracture FU (billable visit) visit type for follow-up encounters on a possible fracture and/or when you do not want to bill the global fracture care code. This visit type applies to instances, such as rib and metatarsal fractures, where no fracture treatment is provided. Use the Fracture FU (billable visit) visit type if you want to just stabilize the injury and have the patient follow up for a limited number of visits rather than providing full fracture treatment for the standard 90 days. The application bills the standard, established patient, E&M codes 99212-99215 for this visit type.
