  • Guidelines - You can select the coding guidelines to use for E&M coding on the Finalize template. You can select either the 95 Coding Guidelines or 97 Coding Guidelines. To use the 2021 Coding Guidelines, you must enter the 2021 Coding Guidelines Effective Date. If you enter a date, you must also select the 95 or 97 Coding Guidelines to cover visit types not affected by the 2021 guidelines or for encounters before the effective date.

If you select the 95 Coding Guidelines option, additional settings are activated. For detailed information on configuring settings for the 95 Coding Guidelines, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the latest E&M Coding User Guide for NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine.

  • ROS Calculation Method

You can select one of the following options to indicate the calculation method to use for assigning E&M coding credits for the Review of Systems (ROS) from the History of Present Illness or Review of Systems template:

    • HPI and ROS credit is given when symptoms are entered on HPI templates
    • ROS is assigned when symptoms are documented on ROS templates

For detailed information on the ROS settings, go to NextGen Healthcare Success Community and download the latest E&M Coding User Guide for NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine.

  • Medical Decision Making - Under the 95 or 97 Coding Guidelines, if the Medical Decision Making (MDM) level does not need to be selected on the Finalize template, you can select the MDM not a required component check box. For example, the MDM level may not be required for an office visit for an established patient to calculate the E&M code.
  • "Submit Code" to update appointment status - You can select the Update appointment status to check box and select a status in the associated list. The status list is configured in the Custom DB Picklists system template. In run time, after you click Submit Code on the Finalize template, the system updates the appointment status in the Inbox to display the status selected on the Practice Configuration template.
