Manage Mirth® Connect

You can send a test message through Mirth® Connect to confirm that it is working and that email delivery is properly configured. You can also configure the maximum heap size and adjust the database logging levels.

On the Mirth Connect Management window, you can send a test message through Mirth® Connect to confirm that it is working and that email delivery is properly configured. You can also configure Mirth® Connect by adjusting the maximum heap size (the amount of memory allocated to Mirth® Connect) and adjusting the Mirth® Connect and database logging levels.
  1. Do one of the following to open the Mirth Connect Management window:
    • On the Applications Control window, select Manage in the row for Mirth® Connect.
    • Select Applications > Mirth Connect > Manage.
    Mirth Connect Management window

  2. To send a test message, do the following:
    1. Select Test to open the Send Test Message window.
      Send Test Message window

    2. Select Send to send the HL7 test message to the test Mirth® Connect channel (or send your own message). The test message extracts sample data, generates a PDF, and, if the email address displayed on the window is correct, emails the results to you.
      Send Test Message Results window

  3. To configure the maximum heap size and logging levels, do the following:
    1. Select Configure on the Mirth Connect Management window to open the Mirth Connect Settings window.

On the Mirth Connect Settings window you can set various memory settings for Mirth® Connect. In most cases, the default options are sufficient, and NextGen Healthcare recommends not changing the options unless you are an advanced user, and you are trying to solve a specific memory problem as described below:

      • Maximum Heap Size: sets the maximum heap size (amount of memory) allocated to Mirth® Connect. The default setting is the minimum amount recommended. The amount should only be increased if Mirth® Connect reports OutOfMemory errors.
      • PermGen Size: sets the permgen size. The amount should only be increased if Mirth® Connect reports OutOfMemory: Permgen space errors or other errors that may indicate a problem with insufficient permgen space (for example, String, intern or ClassLoader.defineClass exceptions).
      • Use Server Mode: the default setting is to use server mode, and NextGen Healthcare recommends not changing this setting.
      • Use Concurrent Collector: select this option to enable the concurrent collector.
      • Use Incremental Mode: select this option to use concurrent collector in incremental mode. This setting is useful when running Mirth® Connect on a machine with a small number of processors, such as 1 or 2.
      • Use Class Unloading: select this option to enable class unloading in the concurrent collector. This may help resolve permgen errors.

You can also adjust the logging levels for Mirth® Connect, the Mirth® Connect database, and the Mirth® Connect channels. This can be useful for debugging problems.

If you are interested in using an external database with Mirth® Connect, you can modify the following settings:

      • Database Type: sets the type of the database to be used.
      • Database URL: sets the JDBC URL to connect to the database with.
      • Database Driver: an optional setting. If the driver differs from the standard one, enter it here.
      • Database Username: the username to connect to the database with.
      • Database Password: the password to connect to the database with.
    2. Select Update.
The appliance must be restarted for changes to take effect.
