Single Base Unit Anesthesia Charge per Encounter

The Single base unit Anes. charge per encounter option in Practice Preferences > Charge Entry controls whether base units are saved on all anesthesia charge lines, or on the first charge line only.

When this check box is selected, the base units are saved only on the first anesthesia charge line entered on the Charge Posting window for the encounter.

When this check box is not selected, the base units are saved on each anesthesia charge line entered on the Charge Posting window for the encounter.

The total anesthesia units for a charge are calculated as follows: [Base Units + Time Units + Modifier Units = Total Units]

Base Units are defined for the SIM code in the Service Items library.

Time Units are calculated based on the Anesthesia Minutes Per Unit and Anesthesia Rounding Method defined for the payer in the Payers master file.

Modifier Units are defined in the Claim Modifiers library.

For example:
  • SIM code 12345 is defined with Base Units = 3
  • SIM code 54321 is defined with Base Units = 4
  • Payer is setup with Anesthesia Minutes Per Unit = 15 and Anesthesia Rounding Method = Round Down at 7 Up at 8
  • Modifier P4 is setup with Unit Value = 2

Using the above example setup where both anesthesia charges are entered on an encounter, and the total time entered on each charge is 60 minutes, the base units for each charge is determined by the Single base unit Anes. charge per encounter setting.

If the check box is not selected, then:
  • Charge1 SIM 12345: 3 Base Units + 4 Time Units + 2 Modifier Units = 9 Total Units
  • Charge2 SIM 54321: 4 Base Units + 4 Time Units + 2 Modifier Units = 10 Total Units
If the check box is selected, then:
  • Charge1 SIM 12345: 3 Base Units + 4 Time Units + 2 Modifier Units = 9 Total Units
  • Charge2 SIM 54321: 0 Base Units + 4 Time Units + 2 Modifier Units = 6 Total Units
