Setting Insurance to Become Primary

Insurance can be set to become primary on a specific date. An example of where this might be needed: a patient has End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and Medicare will become the primary payer on a specific date in the patient's course of treatment.

In the patient's Insurance Maintenance window, the check box Make Insurance Primary On must be checked for the date field to open, allowing you to enter a valid date when this insurance will become the primary payer.

  • The Make Insurance Primary On date must fall within the Effective and Expiration date.
  • You cannot update this payer with a date that is the same as another payer's Make Insurance Primary On date for this patient.
  • The Effective date must precede both the Make Insurance Primary On date and the Expiration date respectively. Within those rules the Make Insurance Primary On date can logically be the same as the Effective or Expiration date. However, this would not be the expected usage of the three date fields.
