Track Biopsy Specimens Using the Biopsy Log

The Biopsy Log is the master list that stores records of all biopsies for the entire practice. To use the log, you specify a specialty and enter a variety of search criteria, for example, all patients seen by a specific provider on a specific date. The system displays all the biopsy records for patient encounters within the specialty that meet the search criteria. The Biopsy Log enables you to view pathology results for a patient. From the Biopsy Log, you can: Update the order, including the diagnosis. Send tasks regarding the order or results to staff members. Generate and save a benign pathology letter within the encounter. Record how and when a patient was notified of results. Submit to Superbill - This function is available to Dermatology and Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) specialties, and allows the charge for reading the pathology to be submitted by pathologists to the Superbill. Skin Cancer Log

If the patient that you selected in the Pathology Orders grid has a history of skin cancer with skin-cancer-related pathology records, those records appear in the grid of the Skin Cancer Log panel. Pathology Orders for All Other Specialties

For patients of all specialties other than Dermatology and Ambulatory Surgery, pathology orders in the Biopsy Log are created for specimens that are obtained during a procedure automatically when you select the check box for sending a specimen to pathology. When you select the specialty All Others, pathology records for Dermatology and Ambulatory Surgery do not appear in the Pathology Orders grid. The same is true if you select the specialty Dermatology or Ambulatory Surgery, orders for the All Others specialty do not appear in the grid. Update a Dermatology Order for Pathology

For Dermatology patients, if the revised diagnosis is malignant and you enter the updated diagnosis into the Diagnosis field in the Pathology Results section, the same diagnosis appears in the Skin Cancer Log grid on the Biopsy Log and on the Home Page. Select the Dermatology specialty, and perform a search for Dermatology orders. Highlight a Dermatology order in the Pathology Orders grid. Information in the row displays in the fields of the Pathology Results section for Dermatology patients. Click the Accession # field and type the accession number or case number assigned by the laboratory for the specimen. Click the Specimen ID field and select the specimen ID letter assigned to the specimen. Click the Diagnosis field and use the diagnosis search tool to select the diagnosis suggested by the laboratory report. Click the Recommended Treatment field and select the recommended treatment from the list. If you have not treated the lesion, select No for the Lesion has been treated question

Update an Ambulatory Surgery Order

For Ambulatory Surgery patients, if the revised diagnosis is malignant and you enter the updated diagnosis into the Diagnosis field in the Pathology Results section, the same diagnosis appears in the grid on the Biopsy Log and on the Home Page. Select the Ambulatory Surgery specialty, and perform a search for Ambulatory Surgery orders. Highlight an Ambulatory Surgery order in the Pathology Orders grid. Information in the row displays in the fields of the Pathology Results section for ambulatory surgery patients. Click the Accession # field and type the accession number or case number assigned by the laboratory for the specimen. Click the Site Specific field and select the specimen ID letter assigned to the specimen. Click the Procedure description field and select the appropriate service item ID and description from the list. Click the first Diagnosis field and use the diagnosis search tool to select the diagnosis suggested by the laboratory report. Repeat this step for each Diagnosis

Send Tasks Regarding a Pathology Order or Results

Tasks related to a pathology order can be sent to others within the practice for further action. Tasking sends order details to the recipient. Select the specialty and perform a search for the pathology order record. Highlight the record in the Pathology Orders grid. The details of the selected record display in the Pathology Results section of the Biopsy Log. Click the Quick Task button. The Quick Task Priority template opens. Note: To display the Quick Task Priority template, you must first select the Allow Override check box on the Quick Task Setup template. Click the Task priority field and select the applicable priority from the list. Click Save & Send. Note: The task recipient is configured in the Practice Configuration practice template. If you do not configure the task recipient in the practice template, the Quick Task Setup template automatically opens from the Quick Task button to configure the quick task functionality.
