Care Guidelines Overview

You can set up the care guidelines for a patient using the Care Guidelines template. Care Guidelines are made up of care guideline orderables (formerly protocols) and recommended care items with minimal difference in case of clinical workflow. Some guideline items are performed on a specific time interval, which is indicated by a date in the Due column, and others are not. Items with due dates are ordered, while items without a due date are listed as a reminder to the provider to review them with the patient and update their status without having to place orders. For configuration and setup purposes, care guidelines are separated into two types, care guideline orderables and recommended care. Each type of guideline is configured differently. Care Guideline Orderables are those items that are associated with orders in the application; they have CPT® billing and compendium codes. Recommended Care items do not appear in the Orders table. Care Guidelines Definitions

You can set up the care guidelines definitions on the Care Guidelines Setup template. Orderable items (formerly protocols) are associated with orders in the system; they have CPT ® billing and Compendium codes. Recommended Care items do not appear in the Orders table. They include things such as medications and patient advice to quit smoking or to follow a low sodium diet. They consist of referenced guidelines, and do not have orders associated with them. Guidelines is a general term referring to both the orderable items (orders) and recommended care items (non-orders). The term care guidelines may be used interchangeably with guidelines. The Care Guidelines templates are used to handle Health Maintenance and Disease Management functions, including guideline testing and screening, and recommended care. Setting Up Care Guidelines for Use

You can set up the care guidelines for a patient and document the details on the Care Guidelines template. In NextGen® Adaptive Content Engine, the Care Guidelines template is used to handle Health Maintenance and Disease Management functions, including guideline testing and screening, and recommended care. You can open the Care Guidelines template using the Care Guidelines link, in the top navigation tabs of all the main tabbed templates for every specialty. CAUTION: Before using the Care Guidelines template in a clinical setting with patients, content on the template should be carefully reviewed by the individuals who are responsible for maintaining the system. You can update as necessary to meet the needs of the practice. Care Guidelines link is always available on the Care Guidelines template. Care Guidelines Grid View Template

You can document the care guidelines details for a patient using the Care Guideline Grid View template. The Care Guidelines panel on the Care Guidelines grid view template displays the items that are due for the patient. You can view the following panels on the Care Guidelines grid view template: Care Guidelines Recent Orders Screening Questions Metrics Vital Signs Immunizations Nutrition Drug Therapy The Care Guidelines grid view template offers basic functionality for activating and tracking guidelines for the patient. You can document the diagnostic studies that are performed previously or elsewhere on the Diagnostic History Entry template using the Diagnostics link on the Care Guidelines grid view template. Care Guidelines Paged View Template

You can document the care guidelines details for a patient using the Care Guideline Paged View template. The Care Guidelines Paged View template displays items that are part of an active guideline whether it is due or not in the Care Guidelines panel which enables you to see the items that are part of the guideline set. If you want to change the Interval, Start Age or Stop Age, you can update the details Care Guidelines panel. An icon adjacent to the guideline is to indicate that two different conditions have been added to that guideline. An info icon for Needs Verification is to show removed or deleted implantable devices and inactive medications after a guideline is auto-applied to the patient's chart. You can manually remove outdated guideline using the Add/Update button.
